Weirdly enough in the old school days "stone" was a transitive verb Hal Ellson's 1949 dime novel Duke, depicting street gang culture in Harlem: "A lot of guys chew coke. Once you really chew coke it will really stone you"

Multiple revelations here That getting high from cocaine used to count as "stoned", and that it was something you chewed (I assume coca leaves) I didn't realize that was still a thing in the 40s, now I wonder exactly when powder cocaine replaced it
