In the UK’s case the process of getting leave to remain in the UK for the spouse is expensive and complex and permission is frequently refused.

To be honest it’s really weird that the US has managed to combine that kind of ancient tradition worship with a codified constitution. The only reason the UK manages to have an unbroken set of legal traditions going back over a thousand years is because they can be fudged.

Major parts of the UK constitution can simply shift or be reinterpreted over time as needed to keep things working. And that’s a constant process.

What I don't really know is how unusual it actually is. Yes, France is on the Fifth Republic, but other than some high-level changes to legislative/executive/judicial processes, how much did the body of law actually change?
-
Well, the change between the Kingdom, the first Republic, and the First Empire was very large, but I get the impression it kind of settled after that, and the later iterations have been more tweaks rather than wholesale rewrites.
