I never read any of LIW’s books after “Those Happy Golden Years,” and all I can think was that I dodged a fucking BULLET. I still love the earlier books, but Rose’s meddling with the later ones still disturbs me.

The First Four Years was published posthumously by RWL's sorta-adopted son, so it doesn't have her meddling. Laura is very upfront about how terrible things were- crops fail, debts grow, and eventually their dream house burns down.
