Like, the essence of House's character was supposed to be that he was FURIOUS with doctors "giving up" on patients and just letting them die of a "mystery" illness, because it had actually happened to him and that's how he lost the use of his leg

Yeah, you see a lot of moments of that in the early episodes of the series, where it's very clear that the "sociopathy" is a front he puts up to protect himself from his own vulnerability. And then they just forget about that, mostly.
