I think the two are at least somewhat different. Christianity operates first as a specific structure of faith, I'd contend, and only secondarily or tertiarily as a philosophy or set of ideals. Even moreso with Scotsmen, people of a region long before they are anything else.

Feminism is, by contrast, primarily a political position or philosophy of some kind. What the structure of it is is up for debate, but I think it pretty clear that some ideological positions are somewhere on its outside.

Policing identity is just such a doomed task. Everyone has different definitions. And it's not like I'm going to let you define me anyway. Let people self identify and sort them a different way.

That's definitely a thing. I'm far more concerned with a media that's eager to meet their demands to be treated as the *only* feminists than I am with whether they're "really" feminist or not.
-
The whole framing of "trans activists vs. feminists" is precisely because some TERF said that trans people and allies aren't "really" feminists, and what benefit, exactly, is there to saying "no u"?

I kind of feel like this case is a less a No True Scotsman as it is a callout on Jay's part - a demand that feminists do better and recognize their own hypocrisy rather than saying none of them were/are transphobic. Leah's point is also entirely correct though.

It seemed pretty clear from the context of Jay's tweet that he was referring to the inherent contradictions between transphobia and the basic tenets of feminism - not necessarily saying that it's invalid to refer to any transphobes as feminists. I could be wrong, ofc
-
Yeah and Leah is taking the position that this lets "feminism" as an institution off the hook in an unhelpful way, and I tend to agree with her on most things

In the future I'd take care before making comparisons like this simply in that Christianity is a cultural dominant and feminism is not, except perhaps in its most venal possible form. Just practically this completely changes the role of gatekeeping imo.

YES THANK YOU. I am constantly saying this. TERFs are garbage but it’s a cop out to claim they’re “not feminists”. It is quite erasive of the history of transphobia running through various feminist movements.
-
There are also plenty of non-TERF feminists that are transphobic
