How exactly did longbows, known for requiring significant arm strength, end up becoming the Default Female Protagonist Weapon? Is it just Hunger Games?

Longbows are a bit of a curveball but it's totally possible to construct a short bow (60" tip-to-tip) with a draw weight of 25-45lbs, last time I made one from poplar it came out with a 50lb pull at 15" before I shaved a ton of material off and bought that down to ~30lbs.

Right but would it have pinned a bandit to the wall through his head at 50 feet

I.. uhh.. No. Definitely not, I'd doubt even a full draw 80lb longbow would effectively do that. That seems rather like the conceit that handgun rounds send people flying across the room rather than just sorta balancing out the entry/exit forces and leaving them where they are.

This is one of the things they got right in The Expanse that was spooky af. Shoot somebody in a weightless environment and they just go limp where they are. They don't tumble or fly backwards. They just hang there dead.

Well, most of the time. At least some of the time the body would end up spinning in place. Not from the force of the bullet, but from the body instinctively trying to twist and pull away from the source of pain

Yeah, the "blown across the room" trope with firearms is partly driven by people seeing this seem to happen when people get shot who are trying to dodge or run away The bullet "sends them flying" because they were already running away at full speed when it hit them

The laws of motion dictate that any bullet that can hit with sufficient force to fling a person across a room must have also expended the same force on the gun and the person firing the gun. So, unless the shooter ways 10 times the target, they will also get flung across the room
