How exactly did longbows, known for requiring significant arm strength, end up becoming the Default Female Protagonist Weapon? Is it just Hunger Games?

Machines! These are machines. This is another mosaik-stone for my personal historic headcanon regarding the european middle age as a prelude to the industrialisation as opposed to the conception of this era as a dark age. Also I need cooler names for titles headcanon sections.

I'd love to read a book about that, or maybe some online articles or YouTube videos. There's a lot of fascinating technological development going on in the Middle Ages, when science and religion worked hand in hand and monks and scientists were one and the same.

I keep seeing that point brought up here and there, but I've never found anything to back it up. It was probably the most popular missile weapon in continental Europe. It's kind of like Innocent II banning crossbows. Matt Easton made a video about it.https://youtu.be/VH431Lguuis

Crossbow is the real pre-modern ranged weapon for women
-
At least the more sophisticated designs which came with a device or mechanism that made it easier to stretch the string. But keep in mind that the idea "weapon for woman" woul have been rejected as a whole by most medieval people

We still see that now and then. Being Joffrey’s signature weapon in Game of Thrones, for example.

Yes but, have you seen what kind of wounds a crossbow bolt rips? Without antibiotics and sterile wound care a fleshwound probably means a long and painful death or amputation. No wonder this weapon was despised
