I think the converse of this is that most of the time, that person is actually right. Like, the switch has to flip to survive in some extreme circumstances, but it's dangerous if it flips too soon.

We do best as a species when we operate in a group where someone is able to flip the switch at exactly the right time and we all agree to let that person flip the switch for all of us. Problem is we often make a mistake about who to pick.
