Jesus Christ, are people really arguing that enslaved people had no pretence between the rogue country that wanted to preserve slavery and the one that ultimately sought to destroy *chatel* slavery?https://twitter.com/amafixedmylife/status/1250068082300764162 …

To make the assumption that slaves had “preferences” between which oppressors they liked more is disgusting. Not a single one of you knew what they knew. You’ve been told stories of the most unique slave experiences (the Underground Railroad). Most did not have those resources.

No ones saying they didn’t have pretense, but let’s not act like the Union were fucking heroes. The union allowed slavery to continue for years before the Civil War. These kinds of dumb ass hot takes are why white people today think that “they saved us”.

Nobody argued that enslaved people all ran to wrap themselves in the US flag (although there was quite a bit more of that among the "uneducated masses" than you seem to think, like the Freedmen's Memorial for Lincoln in DC) Just that they had a strong preference

The evidence is that Black people in the 1860s, in both the North and South, cared a lot which side won the war, and strongly preferred that it be one particular side
