PotC was definitely not planned as a trilogy, the sequels were a mad rush to cash in on an unexpected windfall

I... don't think this is true, since the whole reason the PotC movie exists is Disney capitalizing on the IP of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland/Disneyworld

It's actually kind of the other way around, Ron Gilbert at LucasArts said his favorite ride at Disneyland was always Pirates of the Caribbean and that's what inspired him to create the Monkey Island series, so that's why they feel similar

I did some googling and I'm pretty sure this is an urban legend According to this Monkey Island fansite the writers of Curse of the Black Pearl actually got pissed at being asked about itpic.twitter.com/ywK59Rqvuz

It is a bit darkly funny that since purchasing LucasFilm, Disney now owns both of these franchises.

The funny thing is I think what clinched the Monkey Island connection for a lot of people was the "Voodoo Lady", since that's not something you typically saw in old school pirate movies that generally avoided the supernatural

Yeah. That and the "undead skeleton pirates" element, since the skeletons in the original ride weren't really presented as anything but corpses. But still plausibly attributed to shared influences more than anything

Man they made a Haunted Mansion movie to piggyback on PotC that, ironically, faded away without a trace very quickly

I remember a time when Guillermo Del Toro once said he wanted to make his own Haunted Mansion movie, one based on the actual weird lore of the attractions? He'd include the Hatbox Ghost and everything. Damn, I'd pay good money to see that movie.
