I agree that the POTC trilogy is actually one of the better examples post-original Star Wars

PotC was definitely not planned as a trilogy, the sequels were a mad rush to cash in on an unexpected windfall

I... don't think this is true, since the whole reason the PotC movie exists is Disney capitalizing on the IP of the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland/Disneyworld

It's actually kind of the other way around, Ron Gilbert at LucasArts said his favorite ride at Disneyland was always Pirates of the Caribbean and that's what inspired him to create the Monkey Island series, so that's why they feel similar

I did some googling and I'm pretty sure this is an urban legend According to this Monkey Island fansite the writers of Curse of the Black Pearl actually got pissed at being asked about itpic.twitter.com/ywK59Rqvuz

It is a bit darkly funny that since purchasing LucasFilm, Disney now owns both of these franchises.

The funny thing is I think what clinched the Monkey Island connection for a lot of people was the "Voodoo Lady", since that's not something you typically saw in old school pirate movies that generally avoided the supernatural

But that was just because Ron Gilbert and Elliot/Rossio were both fans of the classic Tim Powers book On Stranger Tides, which deliberately mashes up the Golden Age of Piracy and a bunch of lore about Caribbean sorcery And then Disney just straight up bought the rights to it

And just did the book On Stranger Tides but with the protagonist replaced by Jack Sparrow, going full circle with the chain of inspiration

I never saw the On Stranger Tides film, but from what I read it was a really really loose adaptation, barely taking anything but the title and the fact that Blackbeard is there. Which actually seems like a bummer
