Not just against people who were good at it, but people who would get enraged at you for not doing it right. Kids would benefit more from unstructured play with friend groups of their choice, i.e. another recess. They run around way more if it's their choice.

And for older kids, instead of taking recess away as they mature, give them stuff like bikes and scooters that encourage them to exercise on their own and a space to use them. Ask them to walk around the track at their own pace without timing them or mandating distance.
