The total economic collapse of human civilization, which is also something the report avoids talking about, still isn't the same thing as oxygen vanishing from the atmosphere and the species dying out (The dinosaurs had MORE oxygen in their air, not less)

In any case, the thing is to avoid talking about certain doom, or at least just to avoid lying when you do so at least In all likelihood, to be blunt, we ARE going to see 2 degrees of warming (and we would even if Bernie were elected King of the World) and have to live with it

Which means any attitude of "Fuck it, 2 degrees means it's too late, everyone is already dead and there's no point trying" will be ruinous I don't know if we can survive 2 degrees without mass die-offs but we're going to have to try

See this is irks me a bit, because this attitude reads very much like „fuck the global south“.

Okay well it's the reality of the world we live in and shooting me as a messenger isn't gonna help The IPCC report's most optimistic recommendations require rebuilding *every* country in the world - not just the US - and radical lifestyle transformation within all of them

Pardon me but looking at the situation on the ground that isn't happening, and the masses getting mad will not save us France's response to the IPCC report was to try to raise the gasoline tax and they spawned their whole big Yellow Vest populist movement AGAINST it

I don’t know, that kind of defeatist attitude seems very convenient.

Convenient for me? I suppose, although the people telling me 2030 is a hard deadline don't seem very clear on what I'm supposed to personally do to ensure that we meet it, given that I'm fresh out of nuclear weapons with which to threaten world leaders into compliance

Maybe just not the nip the hope that change is possible in the bud like that?

Okay, well, from that POV saying that all hope was lost when Biden was nominated is equally unhelpful

I think it's *very unlikely* that we actually stay below 2 degrees, but any movement in that direction is good, whether it means that efforts at mitigation keep us at 1.5 rather than 2 or that they keep us at 2 rather than 2.5 (or 2.5 rather than 3)
