shopkeeper's privilege is one of those weird areas of the law that create dumbest bar exam questions. It varies by jurisdiction, but a lot of states allow security guards to use "reasonable" physical force.

can they tackle you if you try to run? Most states, likely, yes. (My state, Illinois just has the "reasonable manner" standard for detention. So many torts and defenses are decided by whatever reasonable is. Bloody objective standards!
