At the time he wrote it as an intentional joke, an ironic twist, it was a common formula for science fiction back then Have someone with the miracle technology of the future pine for the "primitive" present day But that one in particular feels weirdly prescient

I remember OITNB hit this theme, that prison is as deliberately dysfunctional and awful a social environment as you can imagine and yet after one week in the SHU being out among all the dickheads and assholes is like heaven, like being resurrected from the grave
