I should point out that a lot of modernism is way more political than a lot of people realize. Joyce, for instance, was underestimated as a political novelist for a long time because much of the scholarship for decades was written by Americans who knew too little Irish history

(This is obvs an oversimplification - but I do also think that a lot of people take TS Eliot et all at their word about being apolitical and just don't take the time to historicize. A lot of allegedly modernism-derived writing advice is simply ahistorical)

I found a copy of Readers Digest from the 1960's once and man, the amount of propaganda I saw blew me away. Full of stereotypes and very biased slants.
