So many of these hoaxes fall apart almost instantly if you actually go and look but they work because people don't look, they passively absorb them because they sound like the kind of thing they already believe

Which is why the worst and most obnoxious part of dealing with hoaxes is the hedging people do afterwards "Okay but this is the kind of thing you could totally believe" "Okay but this kind of thing happens all the time" Does it? Does it really? Are you sure?
