Even if I completely accepted that a certain technological landscape mandates a certain business model, the original "Luddites" under Ned Ludd were a *workers' revolt* determined to *delay* the inevitable evaporation of their livelihood by any means necessary

And it's actually kind of pernicious to just cast them as ignorant fools and villains of history and take the side of the consumers by taking the side of the capitalists

How would this even work? I, reader, exist. Joe Author exists. Joe Author wants to demand upfront payment for his work from me. He's not allowed to do this by saying, "I've written a book, but you need to pay me before you read it."

It's the Kickstarter model, and it's fairly well established at this point that it works well for some things (generally for people who've already built up some kind of brand online) but very poorly as a replacement for what traditional publishing does

I've honestly never seen anyone Kickstarter a book (which of course doesn't mean it doesn't happen at all). Physical copies of webcomics? Yes. Videogames? Yes. Books? No.

Books are hard to Kickstart, they're hard to build up "previews" and "extras" for in order to use as marketing and backer rewards

We have that at a very low level, artistic grants meant to subsidize non-commercial work, but it's extremely limited and the idea of it replacing the entire culture industry is a pipe dream Socializing all food production and housing would realistically come first and be easier

Okay but the social forces that push against DRM - a vast chunk of which are funded by Big Tech which profits from content being "free", and who would be directly hit by this tax - would push back even harder against this proposal

If you missed the point, those big tech companies developed DRM out of their own volition. The people who fought against it, were consumers and the free software people.
