I have never understood, from a philosophical perspective, how we banned corporal punishment for adult prisoners as "cruel and unusual" decades ago but if the person getting beaten is a child it's okayhttps://twitter.com/jessfromonline/status/1244798938621886466?s=19 …

Does the 8th Amendment apply? It may be something technical on legality, rather than a philosophical position. I assume that most of the people who want to beat children would also want to beat adult prisoners.

Ah, apparently it was banned by statute but never actually ruled unconstitutional

I think that's the justification, sure. But I think the actual reasons given are a cover for either the "I turned out ok!" hazing style BS or just… treating kids like possessions.

My inclination is that it comes from the simple fact that we are given broad authority to control our children rather than anything specific about the interaction. By implication, this would mean that we actually would be better off if we could hit adults.

I read a series of blog posts about estranged children forums (for the parents, specifically), and one of the low key themes is the parents wishing they could beat their adult children, and that it'd solve the "misbehavior".

I think it's based on the concept of "dignity," where an adult should have the respect of other adults but children shouldn't. Debates on the appropriateness of wife-spanking lost popularity when women couldn't be popularly conflated with children.

The philosophy is that the school stands in the place of the parent, so any condemnation of physical abuse by the school implicitly condemns parents who do the same. Sadly, a lot of places still see children as the property of their parents to do as they please.
