Even in a full communist utopia, if there's any fork of social reward for creating artwork at all (Whuffie or whatever) there has to be a way to assign it based on whether people actually consumed it and gained enjoyment from it rather than just that you did it

But outside of full communist utopia this is just frivolous Even if everyone gets UBI, if capitalism still exists and income for other jobs still exists, then if artists live only on UBI and people with "real jobs" live on UBI + salary, expect a lot fewer artists

I would be very surprised if the total amount of money passed around on Patreon even comes close to approaching the decline in money paid out to authors as a class via traditional publishing over the past 20 years

Not even close. I know several people who use patreons, and none of them I would consider even middle class incomes.
