The really scummy thing about this is how, just like the Google Books lawsuit, the stance is always to just do it first - dump all the content you have into the new channel - and then wait for rightsholders to take the initiative to send takedown requestshttps://twitter.com/alexanderchee/status/1243865546749345792 …

Sometimes I wonder what can be done to discourage this sort of thing through the library systems we have already. One thing I do know can be improved is ebook rental for libraries themselves. Not sure if you've tried, but there are some horrid systems out there...

I think part of the reason these things happen is because nobody's been able to make renting electronically as frictionless as the Amazon Empire has. We all hate amazon, but have to admit that their ebook game is unmatched.

Renting through my own local library is done through this ancient mobile app that just connects you to a few disjointed databases by - get this - opening a mobile browser window. I honestly don't even try convincing people to use this system, it's that bad.

Like, I am so sorry to authors, but we cannot in good conscience just tell people "rent from your local library" and leave it there. This is horrendous.pic.twitter.com/Bx4zVCzYKV

Another problem with renting ebooks and audio books: they're still treated as a finite resource to actually discourage more people renting electronically. The very system Chuck is telling people to use is working against them. This is a structural problem bigger than just piracy.pic.twitter.com/bA9lZz5lm9

This part is the part that's necessary and non-negotiable There needs to be scarcity of access to "free" ebooks or nobody will buy ebooks, there's literally no reason to

I know, as I say here. The problem is that nobody is renting, either. So right now, we have to figure out why we even have the system.https://twitter.com/BrentonPoke/status/1244502207090868224?s=19 …

Brenton Poke @BrentonPokeReplying to @BrentonPoke @arthur_affectTo be clear, I am for buying books and renting when available, but we can't ignore some of the problems the system we created has. And the thing is, it's not even the libraries' fault. These restrictions are put in place by publishers in part to protect the authors.0 replies 0 retweets 0 likesThanks.
