more than one delivery is more than one act of labour. each act of labour is paid for separately a story is written only once. if i acquire a second copy of a book, the author doesn't type it out all over again

i know what royalties are. this entire conversation began with me, specifically, calling it rent seeking. did you forget what conversation you're in? can you point to the labour costs of repeated use of a pdf download link?

"asking for tips"? are you an alien? i mean it would explain a lot, you can't tell the difference between getting paid to do something and getting paid repeatedly because you once did something

The idea that it's wrong to be "paid repeatedly because you once did something" is the underpinning of many, many collective action problems, likely including the virus outbreak that's brought the world to its knees

I think part of the problem is that most content creators aren't paid a single, sufficient sum to create a piece of content so they have to get paid a lot of small sums by consumers of content after it is made.

The idea of paying the big lump sum FIRST and getting the book later is the idea behind publishers paying an advance, and it's the idea behind Kickstarter trying to disintermediate the process of everyone chipping in to make a book exist

And while there are many ways in which Kickstarter is a surprising success, there are also many many ways in which it has enabled predictable yet still very ugly failures

(You'll notice that Kickstarter isn't GoFundMe, it's very hard to get people to buy into funding a creative work to be released for free on a purely altruistic basis Kickstarter, Patreon, etc all run on "backer rewards", which need to be artificially scarce or paywalled)

The rewards for many Patreon things are often little more than public thanks for support. Many YouTube creators have very sparse rewards and can survive.

Yes, and why Patreon looks to be a much better model for ongoing content creation. But even there it doesn't look like it works very well for, say, authors of books who publish once a year.
