a turnip or a physical book is a finite resource, it's duplication requires materials and labour which must be paid for. a .pdf file doesn't have these limitations. it can be duplicated infinitely, at a cost immeasurably small. if your business model is obsoleted, get a new one

It is no more true that "the price of an ebook just goes to pay some fatcat publisher, the author doesn't care" any more than "the ticket price to a live show just goes to the venue and their landlord" (hell the latter might be MORE true)

Book publishers are entering in a joint venture with the author. They invest in your success in the trad book marketplaces. If an author wishes to self-publish into a market that they feel comfortable navigating, power to them, but not all authors are entrepreneurs.

I will say that every publisher has a different profile and ways of doing business. Look for publishers that publish books that you admire, look for agents that publish books that you admire.

I’ve heard from authors who went to self-publishing route after having been commercially published in the past that putting out a professional quality book typically costs more than you’d give up to a publisher when you have to pay editing, marketing, and distribution yourself.

A tad skeptical. Take “Old Town Road” as an example. The song found its distribution before a company stepped in to “distribute” it in a very old fashioned sense of the word. In some ways I feel these legacy models are actually hindering good works from reaching mass appeal.
