This whole “ideas landlord” thing: You’re welcome to take my ideas and turn them into novels yourself. Writing is about a lot more than ideas. Ideas are the EASY part. You’re not paying me for ideas. You’re paying me for years of hard work learning how to make them readable.

I'm not paying you for anything. I'm not your employer

You're not my employer, no: you're a customer. Think groceries, not landlord/client. You want this turnip? Give me six groats. It's that simple.

a turnip or a physical book is a finite resource, it's duplication requires materials and labour which must be paid for. a .pdf file doesn't have these limitations. it can be duplicated infinitely, at a cost immeasurably small. if your business model is obsoleted, get a new one

The creation of the first .pdf file, however, requires the same amount of labour as a printed book... When your analogy is obsoleted, get a new one.

more than one delivery is more than one act of labour. each act of labour is paid for separately a story is written only once. if i acquire a second copy of a book, the author doesn't type it out all over again

This is the definition of the "gig economy", it's extremely unstable and miserable, and it's likely to eventually lead to global economic collapse The existence of more complex compensation models than task-by-task piece work is one of the underpinnings of civilized society

If an author was compensated once for a book, it would have to be several orders of magnitude more, accounting for a year or more worth of work. ...that would be far more than a $15-$30 cost per book.

I recognize art has value and am happy to support artists by purchasing books and/or using my library to borrow their works. (Thus encouraging libraries to continue purchasing their books and/or getting multiple copies).
