The problem, of course, is that these people are wrong, and charities generally suck at doing the work of governments If "Pay people what you can afford so they can afford to live instead of being an asshole" were a general thing that worked we wouldn't have rich people at all

Pay what you want is an insidious trap like that. On the DM’s Guild, for example, where people post homebrew D&D content for sale to other players: items with PWYW pricing tend to ‘sell’ extremely well, but even compared to low-priced items bring in MUCH less money.

Turns out, when you let people choose how much they want to pay, with free being an option... well, you can imagine what most people pick! That’s not a sustainable or feasible model for anyone to live off of.

This even applies to sites that have high starting prices and then offer deep discounts. Products I know I want, I'll wait for, because Steam will put them at 25, 50% off in a couple months. Jason Rohrer wrote this piece about that specific phenomenon. http://thecastledoctrine.net/seedBlogs.php?action=display_post&post_id=jasonrohrer_1389812989_0&show_author=1&show_date=1 …
