I'm reminded of the person who wrote a column on "Practical Tips for Daily Anarchism" at my college that were both obnoxious and hilariously petty (ranging from shoplifting to bringing the same cup back to McDonald's to abuse free refills)

problems w copyright are copyright trolling (owners stopping others from creating unrelated works by spurious/expansive claims) and eternal copyright (claims being raised long after the author is dead and work should be public domain). Neither is implicated by this piracy

Copyrights are one of the few things that help independent or small time content creators compete with bigger, more powerful, and more influential companies. Online, the DMCA and take-down notices are the only tool artists have to protect their work (and even that is a mess.)

If you believe Marx's theory that workers are alienated from the act of production and the benefits of their labor, copyrights address precisely that issue. Even in work-for-hire situations, creators still have more power to negotiate w/ their employers then most workers.
