Even rational capitalists should understand the value of rest. I mean, they never have, which is why they had to be forced to go to the 8 hour work day, but as someone who was raised to believe "everyone believes they're right from their point of view," these people baffle me

I'm referring to this whole "how dare we pay people more to work than to not work when that is in fact the whole point because otherwise we could all die, including you, rich guy" thing

Like, if you ran a for profit nuclear reactor and the cooling rods cracked, you would shut it down, yes? And you would limit it to capacity so that it didn't get to that point, yes? So even if human beings are machines to you, why do you not take care of your machines?

"They're replaceable" is not an acceptable counter, hence the nuclear metaphor. They are a threat to you if not maintained. See the history of robot stories if you prefer

Like we're not even talking a labor movement or guillotines. We're talking a disease. It'll kill you even if the worker believes 100% capitalism is right and good What is wrong with these people? Do they have no capacity to *self-protect*? How have they not all ODed on coke

I don't know that it's rational even in the sense of what other commenter are claiming is a conscious desire to torture people or dominate them or destroy the planet or whatever It's just a certain unexamined adversarial habit of thought

Having this constant stance that employees are their opponents who are trying to screw them over The whole "give them an inch they'll take a mile" mindset

It's also that their own habits of thought are born of abundance that they exploited to get where they are They're just used to the idea that there are always more workers out there somewhere and unwilling to change their habits in response to it no longer being true

Same with any other resource they're used to exploiting, like cheap oil
