It just sort of sunk in... COVID-19 is the biggest thing to happen, period, since at least WWII, in terms of people impacted, no?

It's the biggest in my life. 9/11, which is the biggest thing I lived through prior, was a single event, over when it was over, and didn't have this kind of sustained impact on everyone.

The US is still in the Middle East as a direct consequence of 9/11.

How and where we’re in the Middle East is affected by the last twenty years of history, but in a large degree, 9/11 itself was a direct consequence of the fact that the US already was in the Middle East. We had bases in Saudi Arabia, we were containing Iraq, etc.

Right, I should've been more specific about the direct actions taken then, and that's my bad. The objection was that 9/11 didn't have "sustained impact on everyone" when it absolutely did. Patriot Act and immigration reform, for instance. But you're absolutely right, of course.

The consequences of 9/11 being much more so related to our collective national PTSD and the attendant shift in foreign policy and counterterrorism rather than the essentially trivial impact of the attack itself. Right now we have the opposite—a concerted effort by bad actors...

/2 to downplay and cover up the impact, when in reality the viral planes have hit and it’s about 9:50 Am as far as this catastrophe is concerned. Right now we’re about here:pic.twitter.com/WLjWG6cBHa

Yeah I mean frankly I'm done comparing this to 9/11, that's what's shifted my perspective from "probably an overblown plot to take away freedoms," which is where I was at and what I still consider 9/11. I hadn't grasped the scope of it then

I agree. This is what 9/11 would have meant if 9/11 had actually been as big a deal as bad actors at the time made it out to be. It was one very bad day. This is...not that.

Yes, this is like if we were actually getting bombed on a regular basis and had no immediate way to stop it, like the Blitz

This is the difference between terrorism, where the bad guys exploit the media to shock and awe you with a threat that looks much bigger than it is, and actual war, where the threat is real and is exactly as big as it looks and you actually objectively do have to flee from it

I mean I feel like I can be forgiven for assuming it was the former given that's all we've seen in my lifetime. Well, excepting the two years of my life when there was looming nuclear war but I don't remember those

It feels vaguely like the last stages of the Blitz, after the V1 was invented - death is just randomly falling from the sky, by the time there's any outward sign of it, it's already spread.

(...and now I realize I've conflated the V2 in there too, since you could hear a V1 incoming. With the V2, you couldn't, until after the explosion already happened)
