Yeah the thing about Chapo's disgust for The West Wing is their whole deal is just a mirror image of Sorkin's - the idea that wit and snark and public disrespect is the secret weapon that brings down tyrants (and, indeed, the only weapon used by trustworthy people of character)https://twitter.com/Danofran/status/1243218940475498496 …

That's the ending of The American President, which Sorkin himself described as written in a cocaine-fueled haze The President basically yells at the whole Republican Party "FUCK YOU! NO MORE COMPROMISE! I'M IN CHARGE!" and the whole nation applauds as one

This is exactly the same narrative people are applying to Sanders' speech to the Senate GOP as we speak That the bill was going to pass (it wasn't) until Sanders' speech made the people rise up as one (they didn't) and the GOP backed down in fear of losing their seats (lol)

They’re rarely even the masses, tbh. The speeches are usually more monologues, from one staffer to the others to buck each other up

Sorkin has almost never, ever written a villain who goes to shake hands and say "You're right, you beat me", much less this nonsense about "making their heart grow three sizes" That would ruin the catharsis of seeing them humiliated

The West Wing is literally one of Bernie Sanders's favorite shows.

see the big speech towards the end of "The American President" for an example. (I enjoy lots of Sorkin's stuff FWIW)
