Tbh I really do hope that after this is all over we follow Asian countries' lead and just normalize wearing a mask on the subway if you're sick or afraid of getting sick What good reason is there not to do it? What pro-social spirit of subway cheer are you trying to preserve

I used to live in Japan. I don't think the masks are helpful. I've read that after 30 mins, they get saturated with saliva from breathing and become permeable to germs. People use them as a crutch and don't cough into elbows. They touch them which spreads germs. Etc.

When I lived in South Korea, I saw that it was also used as an excuse for employers to force sick employees to keep working. They’d say “Just put on a mask and rest at your desk.”

Yeah much as with seatbelts I keep hearing that "This will embolden people to" do things they already do anyway The people who don't wear seatbelts also blow through stop signs, and our maskless society makes people with the flu work full shifts in food service
