What's worse is he linked to an article about how "the placebo effect has been increasing in America" without reading it The fact it's steadily increasing is evidence it's a statistical artifact and it's NOT a sign that Americans' spiritual power of positive thinking is growinghttps://twitter.com/nberlat/status/1243183599584792576 …

he was saying anti malarial drugs could serve as a placebo and therefore be helpful. problem is (a) there are side effects, up to and including death, and (b) people who actually need those drugs experience shortages.

Look around you, does it seem like Americans have more spiritual energy to improve our health with optimism and hope than other countries, or that this power is increasing in our society as years pass

It's like how the Flynn effect (IQ scores keep on going up with every generation) is evidence that *something is wrong with the way IQ tests work*, not that we're all objectively twice as smart and twice as good at solving life problems as our great-grandparents were

(The most obvious explanation being "gaming the metrics", that as testing has become more a part of everyone's lives we just get better at taking tests Something similar is probably going on with "professional patients" in clinical trials)

What if we give each group the same amount of money, but one group gets the money in 10's, one in 20's, one in preloaded card, one in cheques, and one in direct bank transfer and see how altering the format affects the way they spend it.
