It's a more general perversity in a pandemic situation where some form of virtuous behavior involves consuming a limited resource (masks, wipes, delivery slots), so people have to NOT do the virtuous thing to avoid hoarding the virtue for people in more need of it.

...tests, particularly. It's one of the most maddening things because we're in a situation where any asymptomatic person could be a spreader, so were resources unlimited we should all be acting like infected people, but we can't because of scarcity.

The one argument against I think is that a mask can provide a false sense of security leading to more important hygiene rules not being followed.

Which is honestly exactly equivalent to the argument that seatbelts make drivers overconfident and therefore careless

I'm not even seriously hearing impaired and not being able to see somebody's lips when they're speaking to me makes it demonstrably harder to understand people.
