Tbh I really do hope that after this is all over we follow Asian countries' lead and just normalize wearing a mask on the subway if you're sick or afraid of getting sick What good reason is there not to do it? What pro-social spirit of subway cheer are you trying to preserve

Yeah it feels uncomfortable and weird if you're not used to it People used to say that about wearing a seatbelt when that first became mandatory too It's a fucking stupid reason not to do it

The situation with masks is weird right now because the pandemic is in progress, masks are suddenly a scarce resource and it's completely reactive--there were a lot of "don't hoard masks" messages early on that turned into "masks are useless/bad; never wear them".

Yeah it's obviously perverse and violates basic common sense to argue wearing a mask is somehow worse than not wearing one

Americans are socialized to prefer death or sickness over insulting the social perception of stoic imperviousness based on rigidly enforced standards of hyper-masculinity.

My mom moved to Japan in 1970 as a 19-yr-old Army wife who’d never left Kentucky. As you might guess, it made an impression. One of the things she still talks about is the fact that people in Sasebo wore masks when they were sick. She’s always wished we did that here.

So of course now we’re part of the mass of Americans who are sewing homemade masks for hospitals and doctors because the need is such that we’ve had to develop both basic and p95 style DIY masks. Mom is glad that the heightened awareness gives her an excuse to wear a mask now.
