Although the total lack of explanation for who the hidden bastard's mother was, how old he was when his heritage was discovered, what it means that he "chose to be nobody" as though he could've been Sheev's heir, etc were at least mundane questions

Rather than this insane, off-the-wall set of questions the clone explanation brings up (If he's a failed experiment who has no powers how did he even escape? Why wasn't he just immediately killed? In what sense did he "choose" anything?)

Having Palpatine Jr. be a runaway bastard makes his story potentially more interesting than Rey, the actual protagonist. But if you go with the failed clone bit...why not just cut out the middleman and make Rey the lost clone? We got the worst of both worlds.
