People need to stop talking about "the placebo effect" as though it means an actual effect, a magical power of positive thinking, and not a selection bias or reporting bias

A huge portion of "the placebo effect" when it comes to depression, for instance, is the fact that depression itself sometimes comes in cycles or varies circumstantially and the very act of seeking treatment happens *because* the person is starting to feel less depressed
