The whole "Do we choose between a recession or a die-off" thing is so stupid You CANNOT prevent the recession, it's TOO LATE It's like your car is driving into a lake and you're going "Do I hit the brakes to avoid water or hit the gas so I can still get to work on time"

The only way to not have a recession was to not take the wrong turn into the lake, i.e. testing and containment before the virus became widespread in the population The idea that you can drive through the lake, stay dry, and find your destination on the other side is delusion

The current "well maybe just a LITTLE die off" talking points are basically "well yes okay we'll still be wet on the other side, of course there's gonna be SOME water, but it's worth it to get back on the road," never mind that a car with that much water won't still run

To stretch this metaphor to the limit, THERE IS NO ROAD ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE LAKE People are really reluctant to accept the fact that, sometimes, you just made a wrong decision and you have to fully accept the consequences of that and turn back around

People want to think of everything as a "tradeoff", like any two options must be game balanced by the GM, everything has pros and cons, the wise person sees all sides But sometimes that's just false Sometimes a decision is just completely bad

What people want to say is that "Well, South Korea went really hard on their response, and they have a lower infection rate than we do, but there must be some *benefit* we got from holding off, we did that so the economy would be boosted elsewhere right"
