The question "is it reasonable to ask everyone to sacrifice literally their entire waking lives and hide like they're in war bunkers to protect vulnerable people" would never be asked if the vulnerable people weren't more or less evenly distributed through the population

If the coronavirus targeted ethnic minorities or trans people, there would be no quarantine orders. Which isn't to say that the lives of the vulnerable victims of COVID shouldn't be protected. Just that this wouldn't happen if different people would die.

And I think it's worth not forgetting that we've literally never done anything like this before, and "it's for a good cause" has not persuaded us to stop emitting fossil fuels, among other things. So, again, I think there's an agenda here

I'd be lying if I said it didn't cross my mind that a big reason politicians have allowed action to happen is the realization their primary base (older white people) are in immediate danger.

It's not even entirely correct, I think. It focuses too much on the first order effect of old people dying and misses the knock on effects of what happens when large numbers of people, of any age, get sick regardless of if they die. The knock on effects are worse.

Yeah it's not just the first-order effect of the old people dying It's the fact that the *doctors* get sick after being exposed to all the dying old people, and after that happens you now have a society without doctors

And even if that weren't happening you still have the hospitals crammed and no room for other medical emergencies and shit

And that in turn would reflect badly on the duly elected representatives who can't just blame Democrats again.... They held the bag when this happened. They knew it was coming since January had a whole month to prepare and warn people. And it...reflects badly on them anyway.
