The question "is it reasonable to ask everyone to sacrifice literally their entire waking lives and hide like they're in war bunkers to protect vulnerable people" would never be asked if the vulnerable people weren't more or less evenly distributed through the population

If the coronavirus targeted ethnic minorities or trans people, there would be no quarantine orders. Which isn't to say that the lives of the vulnerable victims of COVID shouldn't be protected. Just that this wouldn't happen if different people would die.

And I think it's worth not forgetting that we've literally never done anything like this before, and "it's for a good cause" has not persuaded us to stop emitting fossil fuels, among other things. So, again, I think there's an agenda here

I'd be lying if I said it didn't cross my mind that a big reason politicians have allowed action to happen is the realization their primary base (older white people) are in immediate danger.

I'm not sure why this should be a controversial take. We're barely a generation and a half out from the government and establishment doing *literally* nothing about HIV/AIDS because it was mainly affecting a minority population.

And we've watched the response to this transform in real time nakedly based on perceived political concerns: Trump downplayed because he thought panic would hurt his reelection, then it happened and it's a big deal because it's hitting everyone and especially prime voters.

We're only doing what we're doing right now because we can *see* the worst case scenario playing out in Italy - hospitals chock full, medical infrastructure rapidly crumbling as doctors and nurses get sick themselves
