I'm German, my baseline for rudeness is different. I was surprised how nice New Yorkers were whenever I was there. TV told me New York is supposed to be rude?

I grew up in SoCal and went to college in Virginia, and while "southern hospitality" is a real thing, it led me getting stuck at a grocery store because the cashier was trapping me in a 15 min conversation about my studies when I really needed to go. NYC is much more my speed.

Very much this. I’ve lived in both New England and the South and the attitude difference between the regions is STARK Say nothing of the differences in cultural groups brought about by years of racial and class segregation

This is very true. There's, like, broadly speaking, Seven-ish "United States. * New England * Appalachia * The South * Midwest * Middle America * The Southwest * The West Coast

Yeah, I mean I feel like we act extra nice to British people because we're conditioned to think their accents are badass

I lived in the south as a foreign graduate student for 3 years and people were lovely and kind to me, bet you can't guess which colour of face I have

I also feel like this is white privilege in action. I think someone from, say, Bangladesh or another random country would have a very different experience.

People in the US do actively want you to die, they’ll just smile and call you sir or ma’am while they do it

Yeah, as an Australian we have a similar situation. Visitors reliably gush about just how friendly and helpful people are on the street, which is largely true. What's also true is that at least half of those helpful people are xenophobic white supremacists.
-
The veneer of friendliness is microns thick. Look at how we vote, consistently, *for* the refugee concentration camp system, and *against* progressive, inclusive public policy. It's hard to overstate just how reactionary Australia is.
