Though it's interesting, because the evangelical candidate has only occasionally won the GOP nomination, especially recently. Trump, Romney, and McCain were distinctly *not* the Evangelical favorites. Nor was Bush I. Dole was maybe a default choice.

But that’s kind of the point. It didn’t matter if they had a true believer in office as long as he knew who really held the levers of power. McCain chose Palin as VP because he had to assuage those folks. Same with Trump and Pence.
