The evangelical control of the GOP wasn't written in stone, it was something that happened over time starting in the 60s and 70s, and the most striking thing about it is that this not only took power away from the "moderate" Republicans but turned them into an endangered species

The fact that they were such a reliable bloc meant that it became super uncomfortable to be a Republican who didn't pander to them, eventually it made it so you couldn't function in the party at all

I’ve said that they have a choice between Entryism and Evangelism; the former is easier (take over a political party’s mechanisms), while the latter actually works (take over a party’s worldview). The Left should take their cues from Jerry Falwell, not Jeremy Corbyn.

Imagine the US with a Euro-style political continuum, where Hillary Clinton is basically holding down the right side of the spectrum, the Left has actual victories, and the GOP is a rump party that hangs on to some House seats in the Deep South.

There's a HUGE difference and it's that the Evangelical takeover was bankrolled by Evangelical millionaires and billionaires who wanted a front for their naked domination. The left has no such backers.

They've also got an advantage when it comes to cohesion since it's pretty fundamental (heh) to their subculture to accept top-down dictates about... flipping everything.
