it was a huge number, which is wild because it's like voting directly for racism

It's a false story Obviously some people did do it and posted it, but there's no official count, unqualified write-in votes are thrown out in most stateshttps://www.snopes.com/fact-check/harambe-15000-votes/ …

How many ballots were cast with the president section left blank?

They don't officially report this Since the President race is the one people care about most and a high number of people leave the downballot stuff blank, so there's no one thing you can be sure no one left blank as a benchmark, it's probably impossible to say

Fwiw, even in states where unqualified write-ins are counted, like Oregon, they don't READ the write-ins most of the time Everyone who fills in the write-in bubble goes into a big pile counted as Other

No one actually goes and reads what all the Other ballots said unless the Other category combined actually gets more votes than one of the real candidates

"unless the Other category combined actually gets more votes" implies that there's at least a total count of those

Yes, this only applies to states like Oregon that count unqualified write-ins

In most states, they check to see if the write-in is one of the qualified write-in candidates (you have to send a letter declaring your intent to seek the office despite having missed the deadline to be on the ballot) and if it isn't they ignore it

The general consensus is that even just from a standpoint of maximizing democracy this is a fair minimum requirement, to make sure whoever wins the election is someone who wants the job (and so you know the actual identity of the write-in candidate if it's a common name)
