I lived in Virginia at the time and the election in 08 saw a MASSIVE swing towards the Democrats down the entire ballot based on Obama's coattails Just one year later, that evaporated and Bob McDonnell beat Creigh Deeds for governor in a blowout

And the organizers for Deeds explicitly said they tried to harness "Obama energy" in their own ground game but constantly got people saying "I'm burnt out from last year, I'm sitting this one out, you can only ask so much"

I think maybe they were disillusioned. As a candidate he seemed like a superhero, but as a president he still had to slog thru the same BS (more, really) as any other. I think they were disappointed he wasn't magic.
-
Also seemed like a lot of people were upset he wasn't the leftist they'd projected onto him while he spent a whole chunk of time talking about ending the partisan divide.

Exhausted? Or just didn’t understand politics and thought Obama could wave a magic wand?
-
Both. The Bush years were exhausting. We were constantly on edge, constantly protesting, constantly calling our MOC, etc. A lot like the Trump years, just with tighter control and a less pathological leader. People expected Obama to do everything without backup.

I say it would help the DNC to reform the primary process so that it's streamlined and shorter, thus reducing voter fatigue.
