Foundation tops my list of "books people think they understand but should have actually finished". Just... the whole story is about how it doesn't actually work the way they planned.

That's partly because John W. Campbell pitched Asimov the idea of psychohistory - it's exactly the kind of pseudoscientific crankery that Campbell loved. Asimov, who was smarter, found psychohistory implausible and its creative constraints boring, so he blew it up.
