It's never one dramatic thing that instantly kills off humanity It's just a series of tests we fail one after another, with each one making the consequences of the last worse Every failed system exposes the flaws and weaknesses of all the others

You'd think this one Horseman of the Apocalypse, Pestilence, would be enough of a common enemy for his brothers to recede in importance But no, Famine follows close behind, as people hoard and profiteer And our President keeps flirting with War to justify his own inadequacy

When this country elected Trump in the first place it was a spiteful vote for suicide, whether they know it or admit it or not It was a drunk guy getting behind the wheel and gunning the engine to 100 just because he could

I dunno One of the bleakest lines on the show was the Travelers musing "They're fighting us so hard it's like they don't want to survive" Maybe it's just not meant to be, maybe the hardware in our brains just can't handle organizing systems at this scale

Like how if you get really upset you can go out for a run and sprinting as fast as you can you'll get those feelings out and wear yourself out and probably not hurt yourself But not if you get in a car and go as fast as you can Or a plane

We set up a system where a million people could die because of a fit of pique Because the person we put in charge, the single point of failure in the system, just thought about how the metrics would make him look bad in the short term and had no sense of consequences at all

Because this insane glitch in the way humans think - "If I pretend it's not happening maybe it'll go away" - goes all the way to the top, because our whole system for making sure people in charge don't think that way, for picking leaders wiser than the rest of us, didn't work

This isn't even the worst thing it could be The nukes, thank God, have not gone flying the way everyone was darkly joking about But the Trump years aren't over yet

And it's not like the Trump years will be the last time, like the country that elected him will somehow be miraculously transformed into a different place if he's defeated in November It's not like this country hasn't been a shitshow countless times in the past

Or like this is the only messed up country in the world and that if America fell the new rulers of the human race will be enlightened The world we now live in is more filled with impossible problems and unavoidable dangers than ever and we're still the same stupid monkeys

How many more times are we going to live through some random asshole having to make a decision that countless lives depend on and just fucking it up because he just sucks The opportunities for it to happen are endless How many more can we survive

Thank you for this. I'm not trying to put words in your mouth, but a thing I hope people start to take away from this is that distributed models of government like anarchism, communism, etc. aren't just ideological differences, but technologies for surpassing human limitation

Theoretically our current democracy has human cognitive limitation failsafes in the form of """checks and balances""", but we've all seen how that works out. We should be treating every politician like an AI in the Bungie universe that will necessarily eventually go rampant

I hate to be the cheerleader for guarded optimism, because I'm not, but do you think that this is worse than the six years of WWI and the flu epidemic that killed maybe 100 million people? Followed by, dig it, Warren Harding, who could teach Cheeto a thing or two about dumbth?

Empires have fallen and civilizations have been thrown into dark ages before; humans still manage to survive. I don't think one thing (short of global thermonuclear war) will end humanity - maybe just the way we experience humanity right now.
