Even Prozac got hit with that criticism ("You've got people who don't hit all the diagnostic criteria for depression getting Prozac scrips just to feel better") *Prozac*, which hardly sends you flying into the heavens to meet God God forbid people want to feel better

Addiction isn’t a cure for anything.

Who gives a shit, the question is how well the patient functions and how happy they are and how able they are to fulfill their responsibilities Everything else is just pointless judgment The "addiction" stigma that keeps people off lifesaving meds and costs lives

You probably know more people than you think who are, by the strict definition of the term, "addicted" to a chemical substance

I’m well aware of that. How does the fact people have hidden addictions that they may not be aware of make addiction something we should feed?

Lol that's not what I mean, most people "dependent" on meds to function are extremely aware of it, and the stigma against dependence has a lot more negative impact on their lives than the dependence

Being dependent on medication isn’t the same as addiction, you fuckwit. Diabetes isn’t an addiction to insulin. People with HIV aren’t ‘hooked on’ a cocktail of medication. The hidden addictions I spoke of are addictions to drugs and alcohol most people deny or are unaware of.

Yeah and the line between "addiction" and "dependency" isn't the clear bright one you think it is, especially for currently controversial drugs like opioids

The whole reason people fearmongered about SSRIs is they "create dependency", they can leave it theoretically worse off if you start taking them and stop than if you never started That's something to be aware of when prescribing, it's NOT a reason not to do it

But the fact that you're pushing this narrative of "hidden addiction" tells me you probably don't have opinions here that I care about (Yeah, most of the world is probably "addicted" to whatever legal stimulants are available in their culture - caffeine, nicotine Idgaf)
