Putting strict time limits in everything really was JJ's worst contribution to the Star Wars mythos and that's saying somethinghttps://twitter.com/BootlegGirl/status/1238839826041974785 …

There’s a device in storytelling called a Time Clock to raise urgency and stakes, and some storytellers take it way more literally than others...

For example, Rian Johnson did it too, with the fuel, but it played differently

The random field trip still undermined the sense of urgency

Yeah I mostly liked TLJ but the “ticking clock” aspect absolutely didn’t work for me because the three concurrent plots didn’t feel like they were following the same timeline

Yeah, I wonder if that’s one of those modern aspects that contributed to the “less Star Warsy” feel. The Lucas movies all feel very settled and deliberate. ANH doesn’t have an active ticking clock til the 3rd act!

Yeah, Empire Strikes Back has very similar concurrent plot lines in the middle section, but they work well together specifically because the timeline is vague. It also helps that time passes between the movies so they each start with new scenarios in medias res

It would. But shockingly, Rian Johnson is the only filmmaker (including Lucas after IV) that actually does what the episodic homage to serials is supposed to, which is pick up right where we left off “when last we left our heroes”. It’s the reason IV was made as IV...

I mean, none of the original trilogy do that, they all have a time skip

I know. But the old serials that inspired them do. It’s the original concept behind Episode IV being Episode IV - “jumping into a random middle chapter”
