That's the job of a leader, people look to leaders to tell them how to act and to decide how serious something is, and if leaders slack on the job this is what happens

It sounds stupid but yeah no one person is going to rock the boat if all their friends decide to go out like usual And no one bar or restaurant is going to shut down on their own while all their competitors down the street are still open This is why we have authorities

Authority doesn't have to be legal/judicial or directly enforced by violence It doesn't *have to be* the state itself telling you to stay indoors or cops will actually take you to prison Shame and social norms can be just as powerful an authority if executed well

But it looks like for a lot of people we don't have authorities of either kind stepping up to talk in a way that makes people listen

Apparently, when the Italians shut down all nonessential businesses, quite a few of them went "VACATION!" and zipped off for the nearest ski chalet, turning those into mad coronavirus swapping grounds and forcing the country to order them all closed. Stupidity is universal.

While this is absolutely true wrt stupidity, it's hard to make the right decision for ANYONE when there's no clear guidelines. We don't yet know how bad it is or how bad it can get and the people with the highest authority aren't being truthful with us.

Which is to say, yes I'm agreeing with you.
