In a way electing Trump was an expression of national pride wasn't it You thought America was a system that worked so well it could just keep on chugging along if you deliberately put the dumbest worst person in the world behind the wheel That we were immune to consequences

The Republican and libertarian small government types push all this disingenuous sunny optimism Central authorities are intrusive tyrants who don't know anything Local communities and businesses will naturally self organize in response to crisis, and do a better job

And we've put that to the test and ha ha oh my God They're so bad at this They suck so bad

You don't need a top down conspiracy theory to talk about the American coverup of the crisis Every boss and bureaucrat in America was in on a DIY coverup That's the invisible hand at work, no one wants to be the first one to cut hours or close up and lose money to the other guy

I've been thinking about this, the fact that Taiwan - a hyper-urbanized dense country whose population is dominated by the city of Taipei and where people are crammed into tiny apartments - had by far the best response to the crisis and topped out at like 40 cases

It turns out all those pro-Electoral College anti-urban Don't Tread On Me types were right Progressives like cities because cities make people easier to control In a dense environment, you can keep an eye on everyone and you can tell everyone what to do THAT MEANS THEY SURVIVE

There's more to it than that, of course - Taiwan specifically developed systems they had ready to go after the 2003 SARS scare and that played a big role But yeah at this point I'm just embracing it I do want you in the teeming city hives so I can take your guns and freedom

I do in fact hate your freedom, because your freedom will destroy the world

I can even see it now, all the reasons what they want to start trying won't work, because THIS IS AMERICA "I'm a free citizen, you can't give me orders, you can't force me not to go where I want or do what I want It's the Land of the Free, try to stop me getting in my car"
