He'd been knocked down, dealt with an unstable wife, loss of a son (pre-WH) . . . meanwhile being a pretty successful corporate lawyer for Illinois Central. "Depression" as a free-floating affliction wasn't the issue. He could deal with stress.

Fair enough, but he describes having "bouts of melancholy" since childhood that sound REALLY familiar to anyone studying clinical depression today Which isn't to say there was no environmental trigger (born in a log cabin, and his dad was a real piece of work)
